June Wrap-up

Another month of reading gone,

 

 

Greetings readers,

 

So todays post is my super late June wrap-up that was originally supposed to be posted 3 weeks ago but I was doing the read-a-thon posts then and completely forgot to post this after that.

 

But as I'm in a bit of a writers block I've decided to finally do this today.

 

If you haven't encountered a wrap-up before it's basically where you list all the books you've read in a month and the star rating you'd give them.

 

The way I rate :

 

5 Stars - Could read for the rest of my life without getting bored

 

4 Stars - Excellent but slightly imperfect

 

3 Stars - Worth reading but only mediocre

 

2 Stars - Had a couple of good qualities but probably shouldn't have read it 

 

1 Star - Hate and loathe so much I could burn it

Review - The Chocolate box girls #4 - Coco Caramel by Cathy Cassidy

Books and Chocolate - Can you imagine life without them ?

Hello my bookish beauties,

I bring you a review Today as I believe this will be helpful to all Cathy Cassidy fans who haven't read this yet.

I came up with quote myself because I thought it related to the post I'm doing.

I have a lot to say so we better start :

Series - #4 in The Chocolate box girls

Author - Cathy Cassidy

Page count - 263 pages

Time spent reading - 3-4hrs on the 22nd June

Review :

I bought this book the previous Saturday before I read it and couldn't wait to read it as I absolutely  adore this series.

Initially though I have to admit I was hesitant to read because Coco was my least favourite sister and I thought the plot line sounded juvenile.

Fortunately I actually loved this story and devoured it in one sitting.

The plot revolves around animal adorer Coco the youngest of the Chocolate box girls.

When her favourite but unpredictable pony Caramel is re-homed from her riding lessons to an abusive owner , she set's out on a rescue mission.

With only the 'obnixious' Lawrie ,who is a mysterious worker from the stables who she loathes, for help.

Will Coco be able to keep the horse safe and hidden ?

I feared that there would be no romance however there was and the couple have now become my second favourite after Skye and Finch.

The ending has left me feeling like this is the last book in the series but I seriously hope not as I'm looking forward to hearing Honey's story.

Review - The death of death by K.N Parker and UPDATES !

As we walk in fields of gold,

Hi readers,

So I thought I'd postpone my book haul until Sunday because I usually buy lots on the weekend so I might start doing weekly book haul wrap-ups instead now. Also I really wanted to do this review before I forget the many things I want to include.

The quote comes from one of my favourite songs (Fields of gold by Sting) that I'm currently listening to.

First though here are some new things you need to know about :

Update #1 - I will not be  reviewing every book I read just the ones I have a lot to say about.

If you'd like to request a review of a book that I mention in a post then just Comment anytime.

Update #2 - I'll be doing monthly TBR's now and my first will probably be next Thursday or Sunday.

Update #3 - I have a two Holidays and many day trips planned in the Summer now. One of the holidays is during the Bout of Books read-a-thon therefore I can no longer do it :(.

On the bright side though more book hauls will probably happen.

Update #4 - I'm thinking of participating in the Booktube-a-thon instead though but more about that in the July TBR.

Update #5 - This isn't really an update but I want some requests for post ideas you want me to do and I'll certainly do them.

Review :

 

My first ever Kindle read and a spectacular introduction to a new format it was.

 

Whoever said that "The best things in life are free" was certainly correct concerning this book as that's the price it was. It's not yet been hauled because I read it directly after I bought it and there hasn't been a book haul since the 16th.

 

Although initially I believed it would be an averagely written short story it was actually phenomenal!

 

The plot surrounds a young dead guide working for death who forewarns certain special people of their upcoming death.

 

But she's different to all her colleagues because she can't remember any details of her life and how she died.

 

It will take meeting her newest dying person to forewarn to learn her past.

 

She'll discover that the truth is something that could shock her to death ... If she was still alive that is.

 

I loved the tragic death stories that this story had a copious amount of as they certainly tugged at my sensitive emotions.

 

The unexpected twist at the end was perfect and creates high hopes for my other Kindle freebies.

Review - Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Hey Bookworms,

Today I finally bring you a review and a very positive plus lengthy one at that.

The quote is from the song Cinderella by Diana Vickers. I picked the quote because I've missed her music and am really loving that song at the moment. Anticipating another spectacular album soon from her.

Back to the actual review :

 

 

Book name - Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Time spent reading - 12th June - 15th June

 

Review :

 

After waiting almost five months to read this due to a long reservation list at the library it was finally mine and I had extremely high hopes for it.

 

This is because I saw the splendid book trailer, was aware that my favourite director was planning to film an adaptation of it and my favourite booktuber loves it.

 

It certainly didn't disappoint as it's now in my top favourite books of all time and of this year.

 

If I was to describe the plot I'd use these words/phrases : time travel, self-discovery , family history, phenomenal photographs , heart-warming romance, war, peace, monsters and some very peculiar children.

 

During this reading experience I :

 

Was taken on an emotional roller-coaster ride

 

Became  overly-attached to all the wonderful characters

 

Was chilled to the bone by the despicable hollowgasts and wights

 

Pined over the photos endlessly

 

In addition to being able to visualise it as a movie .

 

 

My local Waterstones branch better watch out as I'll be dashing in there like a madwoman to purchase my own hardcover copy as soon as possible. Obviously I'll be first in line to buy the graphic novel,sequel and film ticket as well when they're released.

 

You can probably already guess the rating , but it is here anyway :

Review - The Celebutantes #1 - On the avenue by Antonio Pagliarulo

There's somethin' bout the way,The street looks when it's just rained,

Hello readers,

Today I post to you in a rather depressed mood due to Undone by Cat Clarke. I'm almost finished yet I'm dreading the ending.It also doesn't help that I'm listening to sad songs.I was always one to create an atmosphere.

The Taylor Swift quote refers to the constant torrential down pours outside my window right now - natures even galvanising the atmosphere to heighten.

Anyway let's move onto the review before I break down into tears and my laptop electrocutes me :

Series - #1 in The Celebutantes

Author - Antonio Pagliarulo

Time spent reading - 25th May - 28th May

Review :

You'll probably recognise this book from my Library Lovelies and Riveting Reservations orginal post. I picked it up last Thursday because it just seemed like the ridiculous 'trash' I'd enjoy.

A magnificent mystery.

The plot revolves around the Hamilton triplets - the richest, most scandalous and famous trio of  New York City.

When they're accused of murdering the maker and breaker of the fashion industry ,due to the fact her body is found dressed in a garment from their upcoming fashion line, they decide to find the real killer.

It's similar to two of my favourite things so I'd recommend it to fans of these :

Pretty Little Liars - they receive unpleasant texts from an anonymous source and are solving a murder in both.

Gossip Girl - (I've yet to read the book series but it shares these qualities with the tv show) it's set in Manhattan and the girls personalities plus lives  resemble that of characters on the show - especially Lexington and Serena.

Unexpected murderer therefore I'll definitely continue reading this series.

Review - Summer Camp Secrets #11 - Falling in Like by Melissa J Morgan

Let the rain fall down, And wake my dreams,

Pleasure to Post to you readers,

So no book haul after all as I didn't go shopping . I can promise with trustworthy certainty that there will be a book haul on Thursday as I'm going to a Nearby ,yet not so frequently visited,town that has at least 20 charity shops !

The Hilary Duff lyrics (I was a colossal fan of her in my naive innocent days and I'm intrigued to read her book series) refer to the rainy day that has drenched residents of my village.

The droplets have been drowned out by my relentless reading though .One book finished.One book started and finished.One book 25% the way through and becoming one of my favourites.

Back to the actual post though and let's start reviewing :

Book name - Falling in like

Series - #11 in Summer Camp Secrets

Author - Melissa J Morgan

Page count - 191 pages

Time spent reading - 23rd May - 25th May

Review :

No.4 in my top 5 favourites from this series, this adorably fun book leaves me yearning to read all the books from this series.

The plot revolves around the trials and tribulations of 4 Camp Lakeview residents after their summer at camp.

Alyssa is shunned by the Art department at her school when she enters an inappropriate painting into their competition and an international campaign is launched protesting that she should be able to enter it - so unrealistic.

Valerie is galvanised to stay with her father whilst her mother is aiding her sick family member. This means having to endure her spiteful step-sister and attend dance lessons with her. When Valerie begins to out-shine her step-sister murder on the dance floor commences.

Tori is developing a series crush on the new boy at her school. However she's forbidden to date him by her father due to the fact it's the son of one of his clients. But will this romance suffer the same fate as that of Romeo and Juliet's ?

Priya is falling in love once again. This time with the boy whose family owns the snack bar adjacent to hers.She can barely find the time to hang out with him though because of her science project. Will this romance end before it's even started ?

Similarly to my adoration of the same writing style wise No.5 in the series the multi-perspective narrative is perfection and I would prefer if the entire series was written in this format.

In conclusion, my rating is :

4 out of 5 stars

Review - Summer Camp Secrets #9 - Just Friends ? by Melissa J Morgan

Greetings fellow book lovers,

In store for you today at the dawning of a new week is another delayed review.

The Ron Pope song quote is referring to the inevitable change in climate after the spectacular sunshine decided to disappear meaning the tragic demise of outside reading.The pleasantness of heat is going to return on Friday according to the current weather fore-cast though so fingers crossed.

Series - #9 in Summer Camp Secrets

Author - Melissa J Morgan

Time spent reading - 21st May - 23rd May

Review :

Bought this book from one of my favourite charity shops in a Nearby town for £1.25 because I'd already read a copious amount of others from the series (these books : #1,#2,#3,#5,#6,#9,#10,#11 #13 and #14).

This novel explores tomboy Priya and what happens when she believes that her best friend starts experiencing emotions towards her.

It's unrequited of course. Until she discovers that it's actually one of her bunk mates he's crushing on and unexpected jealousy strikes.

But does Priya really love him ?

Previously I didn't know anything about the protagonist so it was interesting to learn about her.

It was an adorable contemporary but not my favourite from this lengthy fun quick read series.

I'd recommend this series for those searching for an easy summer series.

I'm rating this :

Review - Sweet Valley High #23 - Say Goodbye by Francine Pascal

I'm Walking on Sunshine,

Hey Book Lovers,

As the title states the heat has continued to influence my life.I've spent practically the whole day devouring a book whilst the sun has tanned me in one of new beautiful blouses.

Also on the subject of home life I should probably mention that my Wi-fi has been back on since Thursday I just forgot to tell you.

Today I present to you a post that should have appeared almost a week ago.Post catch up will continue until at least Wednesday as there's two other reviews I need to catch up on.

I'm officially free from school for a week now though so you should expect better content and possibly more than one book haul.

Now that I've hopefully got you excited, I'll begin my fan girl fest :

 

Book name - Say Goodbye

 

Series - #23 in Sweet Valley High

 

Author - Francine Pascal

 

Page count - 153 pages

 

Time Spent Reading - 19th May - 20th May

 

Review :

 

I purchased this book from one of the charity shops in my town for 10p despite it's battered exterior - can I really resist SVH ?

 

Ideally I wanted to finish it during the final day of the Bout of Books Read-a-thon however Gatsby disrupted that plan.Throughout the school day that followed I could see the twins flawless million dollar smiles begging me to devour it during school work time. It was almost too much to endure so I rushed home to finish this.

 

Although plot wise this isn't my favourite from the series it's definitely the most heart-wrenching and tear-jerking.It takes you on an extraordinary roller-coaster ride that you wish never had to end.

 

The plot details what happens when Sweet Valley's superlatively adorable couple - Todd Wilkins and Elizabeth Wakefield - are galvanised into separation due to Todd's reallocation.

 

You should listen to Taylor Swift's (I don't like her newest album ,except for the song All too well which is my favourite by her, but her old actually Country music is phenomenal) song Last Kiss because the words express exactly what happens during the novel

 

The sub plot was extremely enjoyable as well. Jessica is employed by a dating agency and her match-making creates humorous results.

 

I adored this book and would especially recommend it to those SVH fans who love Todd and Elizabeth's relationship.

 

It has me enthused for my Sweet Valley reading week in June where I'm going to read as many  books from the different Sweet Valley series as I can. More on that in my June TBR post though that will probably appear on Friday.

 

Therefore in consideration of these points I'm rating this :

 

5 out of 5 stars

Review - Megastar Mysteries #6 - SongBird by Annabelle Starr

"Can't repeat the past ? ... Why of course you can !"

Good afternoon readers,

That Gatsby (my latest adoration) quote refers too the loss of Wi-Fi my house is experiencing again. This may lead to poor quality posts but I'm trying to prevent that.

Anyway here's the delayed review :

Series - #6 in Megastar Mysteries

Author - Annabelle Starr

Page count - 130 pages

Time spent reading - 18th - 19th

Review :

I chose this gleefully at the library last weekend when I recognised the series title from reading them 2 years ago.

This series is about 3 normal best friends (Rosie,Soph and Abs)who are constantly solving mysteries for celebrities - so unrealistic.

 In this particular book a new popular anonymous singer ,only known as SongBird,is invited to their environmental themed school fete. However SongBird may start singing the blues because someone is attempting to sabotage this event.

Can Rosie, her friends and her crazy detective programme loving Grandmother stop the saboteur in time ?

It was weird but also successful to re-visit characters I hadn't encountered for so long.Stories like this make me want my own detective agency.

Unfortunately I did solve the mystery of this book before it was revealed but it's the first time that's happened with this series.

I still thought this book was extremely enjoyable though due to the fact they uncover evidence so quickly.

I'd recommend this for people who love Nancy Drew (like me) and are looking for a girly quick read.

I'll definitely be reading the others in the series so I'm rating this :

The End is near ! ,

No I'm not talking about doomsday but the unfortunate end of the Bout of Books read-a-thon.

Today's post will feature my final read-a-thon update but the review posting will still continue for a while. However I may have a book haul on Saturday or a Tag from Youtube post so other content will be mixed in.

Then I'll start reading Looking for Alaska by John Green which I'm very excited  for as the author has received a copious amount of hype. It's his debut novel so it's a good book to start with for his writing.

Review :

 

I borrowed and read this book from the library last year and when it appeared on the library book sale for 10p I automatically bought it due to my adoration of it.

 

Sometimes when I re-read a book I loved first time around it isn't as good as I remembered e.g Point Horror - The Baby-sitter by R.L Stine. But with this book that's definitely not the case !

 

It basically revolves around two very different best friends and how they deal with their separation by keeping contact through letters.

 

The characters are very original and people who I would be friends with if they existed. This is because their personalities express features I'm very poignant to.

 

The letter format galvanises you to be hooked.In addition the letters contain content such as lists so it's not written solely in one writing style.

 

I now urgently desire the sequel ,Snail Mail no more, therefore I'm rating this :

Review - Fear Street - The Prom Queen by R.L Stine and Read-a-thon Update #3

I'm Halfway there,Living on a Prayer,

Hello readers !Today I give you another review and Update post (this one is extremely crucial).

I apologise if you don't like review posts but I made a promise to review every book I read and I intend to keep the promise.

Read-a-thon Update #3 :

Today signifies the middle of the read-a-thon (hence the Jon Bon Jovi song quote) and I'm pleased to clarify I'm on track with my TBR.
I finished Sweet Valley #88 - Love Letters for sale by Francine Pascal so a review will be posted tomorrow.

Today I also want to inform you that there's been a slight adjustment to the TBR. I will not be reading Chasing Redbird by Sharon Creech tomorrow or during the read-a-thon and will instead be switching Point Horror - The Prom Date by Diane Hoh to my Thursday focus. This is because I want to read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald because I'm going to see the film on Sunday. Therefore you should expect a joint film and book comparison review on Sunday.

Time spent reading - 13th - 14th

Review :

The prettier pristine edition (with the girl wearing a dress) was bought in August for 10p in my favourite charity shop in the world (is this a re-occurring theme for the read-a-thon books?) and the ugly battered edition I bought -so I could keep the alternative edition in flawless condition- for 10p in October.

I should not have wasted money on two editions of this novel. In fact if my original edition wasn't one of my favourite horror covers ever two prom queen books instead of one would be donated.

R.L Stine is one of my all time favourite writers yet I'm beginning to loose faith in his stories after what I've recently read by him.

The title of the novel deceives as it's not even prom-orientated except for a maximum of 8 pages worth of writing.

I would have preferred it if the whole plot line took place on Prom night -instead of just the last unnecessary chapter - and the Prom Queen candidates were being killed during the dance.

What actually happened was the plot was a replica to another Fear Street and R.L Stine novel named My Secret Admirer. In both books the murders,accidents,dramatic ending sequence and in general basis of plot has the setting of the auditorium in which the main character attends rehearsals for a play in. Coincidence or Marketing scam ?

Due to my general disappointment, I'm rating this novel :

Review- Pretty little liars #6 Killer by Sara Shepard

Today I finally write for you my first review of Pretty Little Liars #6 Killer.Spoiler Alerts will be forewarned.

Review:

Borrowed from the library this book bizarrely  took me double the time it should have taken (2 days) to devour : however this doesn't mean I didn't adore it.

Continuing on directly from the concluding scene in the previous book (Wicked) this book revolves around what happens to the liars lives after the discovery on the final page aka some psycho stuff.

The plot line now has completely diverted from the show and contains copious unaired flashbacks.

Firstly,things that happened that don't have anything do with Alison's murder and -A ...

Spencer's family are being complete devils throughout this book. Her own grandmother excludes her from her will and her car being taken away for a non-plausible reason - Seriously? So she tries to find out if she's adopted and gets scammed by the women she believed to be her birth mother -Spencer's entire college savings has been stolen.Also she hooks up with Andrew for a while but it doesn't last for long. I felt most sympathetic to Spencer's plot during this book because everything that could go wrong in her life did.

Aria meets another older man/potential love interest but unfortunately he's already taken before she can bestow her love upon him - BY HER MOTHER!!!!!!!! That doesn't stop said love interest though and there's an array of creepy 'love' scenes between them before she moves in with her father and Meredith again. To forget her problems with the creep she decides to try and spawn a relationship with Jason Dilaurentes - BIG MISTAKE -  to try make her 6th Grade fantasies a reality. Predictably it doesn't work out as there's a series of scary angry Jason moments that ruin their possible chances of a relationship.

In other Aria related news, Hanna is competing against her spiteful step-sister Kate for Aria's Brother's ,Mike's, affection.Hanna wins but Kate doesn't care because it all turned out to be a ploy to get Hanna back for the Herpes rumour (in Wicked).Hanna had the most lacking storyline as this was all that really happened.

Emily confused me characterisation wise the most in this book because suddenly her sexuality changed - she went from kissing a girl in a photo booth to sleeping with a guy, named Issac, she'd only known for like 2 weeks. They break up shortly afterwards and to be honest Emily's not that it bothered her because Issac had a psycho mother who wanted to see her dead

Now it's to analyse what I believe is the most crucial part of the whole story - what we learnt about Alison's murder in the order we discovered it.

First the flashback at the start -that was already partially revealed in book #5 Wicked- where a mysterious crash occurred and 'Ali' was rapidly whisked off in a car after quickly talking to the girls explaining about the Time Capsule piece. I think the crash was Alison protesting about
*SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T READ WANTED DON'T READ THE REST OF THIS PARAGRAPH* having to visit her twin sister Courtney (I read a spoiler years ago about this so I know) again and why she was whisked away in the car. This is also why when Emily found that sign in book at the Cavalier dance that the visits Jason made stopped after this date.

It's also hinted at the end of that flashback that Alison's piece of the time capsule flag has something about her murder on it. Unfortunately I don't think we'll be able to learn what was on the flag because (right at the end of the book) ,when Aria had it in her back pocket, she fell so I think it will have fallen out and been burnt by the Barn Fire.

When Spencer saw somebody in the woods and thought it was Melissa I definitely think it was Alison.

I don't have a clue why Jason and Jenna were arguing but I have a feeling it's important.

When Aria asks Jason to go to The Radley dance I know that he gets all freaked out because *SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T READ WANTED DON'T READ THE REST OF THIS PARAGRAPH* he used to visit Courtney there.

I'm really confused at why -A has only been targeting Spencer and Emily. I think -A is Melissa because she seems to have secrets about the time Alison was alive and of course she'd want to target Spencer.

Hanna sees Alison again in a dream (why is it always only Hanna?) and receives all these seemingly cryptic clues from her.When she works them out they turn out to all point the finger to the Murderer of Alison being Jason and Wilden.

The scene at the end where Alison -Or is it?- reveals herself to the girls came as a shock to me as I don't see how the story can pan out for 6 or so other books now. But I guess that's the thing about Rosewood - there's always more secrets.

The ending of this book has left me yearning for Heartless like someone who's drowning yearns for air it's my definite 2nd favourite of the series (after Unbelievable) so far therefore I'm granting it :
